Senior Hardware Engineer [HSE SHWE]

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Hardware Engineer (Analogue/Digital) to complement the existing design team playing a significant part in the product development of a novel phased array antenna system. The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic London-based technology company developing and delivering complex and innovative products into the aerospace, maritime and land mobile industries.

Technical Responsibilities:

  • As a member of the hardware development team, your role will be to design, verify, commission and productise board-level hardware designs for Hanwha’s Phased Array Antenna products
  • To take ownership of hardware designs from assisting with requirements specifications, generating hardware specifications, schematic entry though to PCB layout, fabrication, commissioning, verification and managing systems integration into platforms
  • Collaborate with the other members of the hardware, software, systems and mechanical teams to ensure effective support of the existing development programmes and Antenna Systems
  • Perform design calculations and carry out SI simulations using industry standard tools in order to estimate performance, mitigate high-risk areas and ensure reliable designs
  • Support product design, software integration, validation and handover to production with other Engineering team members
  • Ensure the products are designed for EMC, Environmental and other regulatory approvals and meet the requirements for volume manufacturing (DFT/DFM)

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver on-time and build good working relationships with cross-functional team members and external departments, acting as a technical lead when required
  • Take responsibility for own projects and delivery to tight timescales, communicating through plans, presentations and written reports
  • Provide time and effort required for hardware activities for input into the project planning process
  • Contribute to hardware design reviews when appropriate to ensure quality designs
  • Strongly self-motivated and able to take ownership of problems and finding solutions
  • Excellent communication skills and team working. Self-starter. Flexible can-do attitude

Qualifications & Skills:

Essential:          

  • At least 3 – 5 years experience in a relevant industry working on leading-edge embedded product developments in the data communications, automotive or aerospace industry
  • Strong background in high speed Digital and Analogue circuit design from initial concept, specification and design through to software and systems integration, test and manufacture
  • Knowledge of FPGA design, simulation and test using a high-level programming language such as VHDL/Verilog, in particular. (Altera / Intel Cyclone family)
  • Strong embedded systems design skills using the ARM Cortex family of MCUs, combined with FPGAs and Ethernet Switches. Familiar with interfacing to external memories and peripherals such as Parallel/SPI Flash, SRAM, Ethernet PHYs, CAN, Serial using industry standard interfaces
  • Good understanding of low voltage point of load power supply design (switch mode and linear), control loops and power estimates. Familiarity with simulation tools & test methods for transient analysis, loop stability and frequency response analysis
  • Significant product design experience of complex, mixed signal multi-layer PCB designs and the management of associated debug and integration issues
  • Experienced in the layout of high-speed multi-layer PCBs including micro-via technology, stackup constraints and controlled impedance traces. Solid knowledge of high-speed design techniques
  • Familiarity with schematic capture tools such as Altium Designer and tools for SI simulations
  • Ability to liaise with and manage PCB layout engineers, fabricators and assembly houses
  • Conversant with product safety and design for EMC
  • Design for test - DFM/DFT for volume manufacture. JTAG boundary scan development
  • Competent practical experience in the use of test equipment such as scopes, logic analysers, spectrum analysers, signal generators, power meters
  • Creative with good problem-solving abilities. Able to adapt to a fast-moving environment


Desirable:         

  • A good first or upper 2nd Class degree (BEng/MEng) in Electronic/Electrical Engineering from a leading University
  • Design of products containing the STM32F4/F7/H7 family of MCUs would be a distinct advantage
  • A good understanding of the complete product development process preferably for high-reliability environments, namely aerospace, marine or automotive products
  • Knowledge of the product approvals process to meet CE, EN and the relevant product approvals (emissions, susceptibility, environmental) for the Aero (DO-160G) and marine markets
  • The ability to analyse the trade‐offs between performance, manufacturability, cost and user experience
  • Good practical skills in electronics, soldering and mechanical assembly skills
